“It’s the not the Destination, It’s the journey.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self-Reliance

“The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self-Reliance

“A man is relieved and happy when he has put his heart into his work and done his best.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self-Reliance

Simply put; in the end it all comes down to you!

Even though you have amazing support with coaches, teachers, parents and many other people in your life, when push comes to shove it comes down to the individual to be self-reliant and get the job done.

The sport of swimming is a great example of individual achievement and the successes that can point to your individual commitment and dedication.  When you know in your heart that you have put your heart into your work and done your best, then you can feel proud of your accomplishments.  It is great to have a network of people to help you achieve your goals but for the most part it is up to you to dream and try to fulfill those goals on your own first.

Swimmers are some of the most dedicateddetermined athletes because the nature of this sport lends itself to individual dedication and sacrifice.  It will also afford the life lessons and structure needed to be successful in life.

This self-reliance is not to be confused with the idea that you must become selfish swimmers and not care about your teammates… let’s remember the three pronged approach to our team success:

  1. Show Up –
  2. Be a Great Teammate – Encourage, uplift and support
  3. Do the Right Thing – always strive for excellence

Now go swim.
